Add Border to Image

Add a picture, then set the border width, pick a colour or transparent padding, and round the picture's corners or the outer frame. The border is measured from the shorter side, so it looks even on portrait and landscape photos, and the original resolution is kept. Download as PNG or JPG. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use Add Border to Image

  1. 1Add a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP picture.
  2. 2Set the border width and choose a colour, or tick transparent padding.
  3. 3Round the picture's corners, the outer corners, or both.
  4. 4Choose PNG or JPG and download.

How it works

The border width is a percentage of the picture's shorter side and is the same on all four edges, so a 5% border on a 4,000 × 3,000 photo adds 150 pixels on each side, making it 4,300 × 3,300. The picture itself is drawn at its original size and is not resampled.

Rounded corners are a radius in percent of the shorter side; 50% on a square picture makes a circle. Rounding the picture leaves the border colour showing in the corners, while rounding the outer edge cuts the whole result, leaving transparent corners.

JPG has no transparency, so whenever the result has transparent areas — transparent padding or rounded outer corners — it is saved as PNG automatically. Otherwise you can choose JPG for a smaller file.

Images are decoded by the browser, redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no waiting on a queue and no copy of your photos anywhere else.

Worked example

A 4,000 × 3,000 photo with a 5% white border

  1. Border = 5% of 3,000 = 150 px
  2. Width = 4,000 + 2 × 150 = 4,300 px
  3. Height = 3,000 + 2 × 150 = 3,300 px

Result: A 4,300 × 3,300 picture with an even 150-pixel white border.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use a border colour taken from the photo, or plain white or black, for a clean look.
  • Thin borders (2–4%) suit web pages; thicker ones (8–15%) look like a printed mount.
  • Choose PNG when the picture will sit on a coloured background and has rounded corners.
  • Keep your original; the border cannot be removed later without cropping.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a white border to a photo for Instagram?
Add a white border here for an even frame. If you need the photo padded to a square instead, use the Instagram Image Resizer, which adds bars only where needed.
Why is my picture saved as PNG when I chose JPG?
Transparent padding and rounded outer corners need transparency, which JPG cannot store. Turn those off to save as JPG.
Does it reduce the quality of my photo?
The picture is drawn at its original size. Saving as PNG keeps every pixel; JPG re-compresses at high quality, which is usually invisible.
Can I make a circular picture?
Set the picture's corner rounding to 50% on a square photo, or use Circle Crop Image, which crops any photo to a circle.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is redrawn in your browser and never leaves your device.
Can I add a border to several pictures at once?
One at a time here. Each picture keeps the same settings until you change them, so repeating it is quick.
