How it works

All volumes convert through the litre, which is exactly 0.001 cubic metres. The cubic units — cubic centimetres, metres, inches and feet — follow from the cubed length factors.

The important thing here is that US and imperial units of the same name are different sizes, and mixing them up is a genuine source of ruined recipes and mis-fuelled vehicles. A US gallon is 3.785 litres; an imperial gallon is 4.546 — about 20% larger. A US pint is 473 ml against an imperial 568 ml. Both sets are listed separately and labelled, so you always know which one you are using.

Conversion works by taking your value to a single base unit and then out again, so every pair of units is consistent with every other. Values are calculated at full double precision and only rounded for display, which means round-tripping a number through two conversions returns what you started with.
