How it works

AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec. It compresses far better than JPG, which is why many websites now serve it — and why images saved from those sites often arrive as .avif files that older software refuses to open.

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can decode AVIF themselves, so this tool uses your browser's own decoder: each file is decoded to pixels, drawn on a canvas and encoded as JPG or PNG. A browser too old to decode AVIF will report the file as unreadable, and updating it fixes that.

A JPG is usually larger than the AVIF it came from at a similar visual quality; that is the price of compatibility. Choose PNG when the image has transparency or sharp text you want to keep lossless.

Images are decoded by the browser, redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no waiting on a queue and no copy of your photos anywhere else.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers can convert AVIF here?
Any browser that can display AVIF: current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and Safari 16 or later. Older browsers cannot decode the format, and the tool will say the file could not be opened.
Is the JPG lower quality than the AVIF?
JPG re-encodes the image, so a little detail is lost at any quality below 100. At the default setting the difference is hard to see. Choose PNG for a lossless copy of what the AVIF decoded to.
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose. PNG keeps transparency exactly.
Does it convert animated AVIF?
Only the first frame is converted.
