How it works

Each QR code holds text in a format phones recognise. A Wi-Fi code holds a WIFI: record with the network name, security type and password, which the camera apps on current iPhones and Android phones offer to join. A contact code holds a vCard 3.0 record, a menu code holds a web address, and an event code holds an iCalendar VEVENT with the start and end converted to UTC, so it lands at the right time in any time zone.

Special characters are escaped the way each format requires — backslashes, semicolons, commas, colons and quotes in Wi-Fi names and passwords, and commas, semicolons and line breaks in contact and event text — so a password such as pa;ss,word still works.

Scanners need contrast: dark modules on a light background, with a clear margin around the code. The tool warns when the colours are too close or inverted. A higher error-correction level helps a code survive smudges and wear, at the cost of a denser pattern.

The code is generated in your browser, and your Wi-Fi password and contact details are not sent anywhere. Anyone who scans a printed Wi-Fi code can read the password, though, so only display it where you would share the password itself.

How do guests connect with a Wi-Fi QR code?
They open the camera app on an iPhone or Android phone, point it at the code and tap the prompt to join. Current phones need no extra app.
Why doesn't my Wi-Fi QR code connect?
The network name and password must match exactly, including capital letters, and the security type must be right. The WPA setting covers WPA2 and most WPA3 networks; choose No password only for open networks.
Does the QR code expire?
No. The details are stored in the code itself, not on a server, so it works for as long as the information in it is still correct.
Can I change a QR code after printing it?
No — the details are inside the code, so a new Wi-Fi password or menu address needs a new code. For a menu, point the code at a page you control so you can update the page instead of reprinting.
