The classic text is a scrambled passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC and used by typesetters since the 1500s. Sentences are assembled by drawing from that vocabulary with varied lengths, so paragraphs look like real prose without being readable.

Meaningless text is the point. Readable copy pulls attention to the words, so people review the writing instead of the layout. Latin-looking filler keeps the eye on typography, spacing and rhythm — while still having the right distribution of word and sentence lengths to make line breaks realistic.

The English option is there for the cases where Latin gets in the way, such as showing a client a draft where nonsense words would be distracting.
