Random Team Generator

Paste a list of names, one per line, then split them into random teams, pick one or more winners, or shuffle the whole list. Teams are dealt out evenly, so sizes never differ by more than one, and duplicates can be ignored. The shuffle uses your browser's cryptographic randomness, so every order is equally likely. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Random Team Generator

  1. 1Paste or type the names, one per line.
  2. 2Choose Make teams, Pick winners or Shuffle.
  3. 3Set the number of teams, the people per team, or how many to pick.
  4. 4Press the button, then copy the result.

How it works

The list is shuffled with the Fisher-Yates algorithm driven by crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random source, so every ordering is equally likely. Shortcuts such as sorting by a random number are not uniform and are not used.

Teams by number are dealt from the shuffled list like cards — first name to team 1, second to team 2 and so on — so team sizes differ by at most one. Teams by size fill each team in turn, so only the last team can be smaller.

Picking winners takes the first names of the shuffled list, so nobody can be picked twice.

With “Ignore duplicate entries” on, a name that appears twice — ignoring capitals and spaces at the ends — counts once. The list stays in your browser and is not stored.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Number entries in a fixed list before a public draw so the result can be checked.
  • Press the button once and keep the result; re-rolling until you like it defeats the point.
  • For balanced sports teams, randomise first and then swap one or two players by hand if skills are very uneven.
  • Use Shuffle to set a random presentation or speaking order.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really random?
Yes. It uses the browser's cryptographic random number generator with an unbiased shuffle, so each order and each team split is equally likely.
Can I make teams of a set size?
Yes. Choose People per team and enter the size; the last team takes whoever is left over.
How do I run a fair prize draw?
Share the list of entries first, pick with this tool in front of witnesses or on a call, and record the result and the time shown.
Can someone be picked twice?
No. Winners are taken from a shuffled list without replacement. Turn on Ignore duplicate entries if a name might appear twice.
Is there a limit on names?
No fixed limit; thousands of names work in any modern browser.
Are the names uploaded?
No. The list is shuffled in your browser and never sent anywhere.
